OPSEU Local 232

Parking 1998 Archives

Dec 4, 1998

Parking - It is alleged that the new tentative date for paid parking at #1 Stone Rd is Jan. 1/99. To date, the Management Board Co-Chair of CERC, has not officially responded to the paid parking policy issues raised by OPSEU (our Local to be specific).

Sept 18

Parking related: The parking issue has provincial wide implications for OPSEU, as the government (ORC)  has "out-sourced" (privatized) parking lots at other OPS locations across the province.

Randy Robinson of OPSEU Communications, requires assistance in identifing Locals at the affected locations. Refer to his memo - click here.  If you are aware of anyone working at these locations, please contact Randy by email (rrobinson@opseu.org) or call Flo at 826-4391.

Parking Issues Update
(By: Flo Hines, President Local 232)

A presentation was made on behalf of the local to the Central Employees Relations Committee on the 9th of September and the Management Board chair has promised to come back to the OPSEU chair before the next CERC meeting.

However in the meantime, parking is still being held back for whatever reasons Lepage or ORC chooses to give.  At the CERC meeting, I requested that dialogue be introduced between the parties concerned and that the one sided decisions being made be openly with discussion between OPSEU and MB. Such discussions would include parking fees, handicap parking costs and other matters that already have been tabled by us.

Sept 9

Parking - The paid parking policy appears to be on hold (once again)... The presentation was made at CERC to Mgt. Board. So now we wait for their response to the presentation, which by the way was given by Flo President of Local 232...

Parking - "OPSEU ready to fight plan to charge staff parking fees" -- that was the headline in Wednesday's (August 26) edition of the Hamilton Spectator -- as promised here's the story... click here.

July 31

Parking... The Saga continues... Don't be surprised if there's a delay in the September 1 implementation of the new (paid) parking policy. The MERC referal of the parking issue has been forwarded to CERC, with a request for an injunction until all the issues raised at LERC, have been properly addressed.

The Local's efforts to stop it continue... The Local considers "paid parking" (outside of the GTA) a change in working conditions - which are negotiated! Also, it is questionable whether ORC has met all the required criteria to be able to implement paid parking.

July 24

Parking... The issue was heard by the Ministry Employees Relations Committee (MERC). The MERC fully endorsed moving the issue forward to the CERC (that's where Management Board and OPSEU (head office staff)  meet, to discuss the issues affecting the OPS. Since the parking policy comes from Management Board -- this is where the discussion takes place and decisions are made.

June 12

CONGRATULATIONS! -- Give yourself a pat on the back - you did it!

RE-LePage has decided to delay the July 1st implementation of the new parking policy. This is as a result of all the input given to President Flo, and  the subsequent presentations she made on your behalf to the parking subcommittee and Local Employees Relations Committee (LERC).

The parking issue now goes to the Ministry Employees Relations Committee (MERC) with a recommendation that it be forwarded on to the CERC. That's the Central Employees Relations Committee, where Management Board (where this policy orginiated from) meets with representives of OPSEU's Executive Board.

CERC deals with issues that can't be resolved at a Ministry level or impacts on all of the OPS bargaining unit (OPSEU) employees.
